Lutheran Social Services of Northwestern Ohio Foundation
Generosity Matters
by Fred Heintz, Executive Director, LSS Foundation
What Do You Want?
Do you want …
1. A competitive rate of return?
2. A fixed stream of income – guaranteed for life?
3. An investment in the long-term health of a ministry you support?
Say “yes” to any of the above? A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) might be for you!
1. Current one-year CD rates might be 2.5% (+/-). A CGA at age 75 would currently earn 6.3%, more than double the CD rate. When you consider the income tax savings and the partial tax-free payout, the effective rate of return is even higher.
2. A CGA guarantees a fixed payout stated in the contract, which is secured by the annuity reserve fund, the unrestricted endowment, and generally all of the assets of the organization with which the contract is written. At LSS, we commonly use the Foundations of the ELCA or LC-MS, our affiliated church bodies.
3. At your death, the remaining assets will support the congregation and ministries you named. You have made a lasting difference in the health of those organizations! (And, in the case of LSS, you have made an on-going difference in the lives of people for years!)
Here, in summary, are the basics! You make a gift of cash or securities and receive a tax-deduction at that time. You then receive the income as specified in the CGA contract. The rate of return is suggested by the American Council on Gift Annuities. At your death, the remainder will be distributed as you have designated. To read an example of how this could work – go to www.lssnwo.org, click on “LSS Foundation”, on “Foundation Info: Gift Legacy Link”, on “Donor Stories” and then on “Peace of Mind Annuity.” To calculate your rate of return, click on “Create Your Plan”. Should you want to discuss this further, please contact me at 419.243.9187 or fheintz@lssnwo.org
As always, we recommend a conversation with your legal, financial, and/or tax advisors before making a major financial decision.
Before making a significant financial decision (including a significant contribution), we encourage you to be in conversation with your legal, financial, and/or tax advisors.
Fred Heintz joined the Lutheran Social Services of Northwestern Ohio Foundation in March 2006. He comes to the foundation after working for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for nearly 15 years. Heintz also has a master’s degree in theology from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus and served as a pastor in the Evangelical Church in America for 12 years. He is married to Lana, has two children and attends Olivet Lutheran Church in Sylvania.
Heintz succeeds Josef Kucklekorn who retired as the Foundation Executive Director after 16 years of service to LSSNWO. Kucklekorn, who was instrumental in the Foundation’s establishment, served as its executive director since it was founded in 1993. From 1993 until 1999 he served as both the LSS Foundation’s Executive Director and as the Director of Planned Giving for Lutheran Social Services. In 1999 he retired from his planned giving position but continued to manage the foundation. Kucklekorn, though now retired, will continue serve the foundation as an investment advisor.
